A Teacher’s Guide for Grades 7-9:

I Am Malala

This memoir tells the story of Malala–a brave, intelligent fifteen year old girl who fights for girls’ rights in her country, and nearly dies for her cause. We chose this book for its careful exploration of powerful social and emotional themes: gender oppression, access to education, violence, family, and bravery. This curriculum will inspire students to build connections between Malala’s inspirational life story and their own.

I Am Malala documents the true life story of Malala Yousafzai, the youngest person ever to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This memoir helps students personally connect with the political struggle taking place in Malala’s community, which is often splashed across the headlines as war rages throughout the Middle East. Malala knows from a young age that she loves school and enjoys learning; this young woman knows that her education is an important part of building the future she wants. But when the Taliban moves from Afghanistan to her own nation of Pakistan, Malala’s ability to attend school is threatened. Slowly, the Taliban takes away that right, and Malala and her father both respond by speaking out in favor of education for girls. The Taliban threatens to shoot Malala for her role in the girls’ rights movement, and follow through on their threat. While Malala survives, it takes her months to recover from her injuries. After the shooting, Malala emerges as a world leader in the fight for girls’ educational rights, passionately lending her voice and story to a cause she cares about deeply.
